(due to the ineffeciantcy of creating, transporting and storing electric energy) At this time almost all of that energy comes from the big enegy corps in the form of burning cole, gas or oil in power plants. In other words, unless you use hydro, wind solar of nuclear power, in order to drive an electric car there is a dirty power plant somewhere that is making your electricity.

2006-06-28 [zoloftzantac]: Looking at the law of conservation of energy, it is easy to show that if you get you power from a dirty power plant, that an electric car creates *more net polution* then a normal car. This is because the process of creating, transporting and storing electic enegry is less effecant that creating, storing and transporting gasoline. This means that the power plant has to burn extra fuel to both make the electricity for the electric car and over come these ineffecantcies. Burning more fuel results in more polution. So, until we get most people on clean energy, the electric car is a pain in the ass AND is making polution worse!

Some people are doing it now by running the eletric cars on solar power. some areas get most of their power from hydro-electric damns also, it is just a matter of access to clean electricity, most of us don't have that

2006-06-28 [~*Astarte*~]: but do we not have it because our society, as a whole, is happy with status quo... meaning most people are not willing to make the changes necessary to make the use of clean energy widespread. If we really wanted to make change - really, truly cared enough about our environment to do what it takes to make the use of clean energy common place, we'd make it happen. I think of a coven syster I have - she's in her mid-twenties, dynamic, down-to-earth, LOVES Mother Earth... she works 3 jobs, and goes to school full-time... she recently (a few months ago) gave up driving her car, and rides her bike everywhere. She completed a roundtrip to Portland one month ago with her black lab mix in tow...

2006-06-28 [~*Astarte*~]: think about how many people could do this - give up their gas-guzzling vehicles for the use of foot-powered ones... Even those of us with children can make a difference... When it came time for my Explorer to move onto it's next plane of existence, I purchased a smaller, more fuel-efficient car. One of the things that irks the heck out of me is seeing a single person or even a couple driving around in a gas-guzzling SUV - stupid - just plain stupid.

The idea is that we are getting close to peek oil production (the max rate we can suck oil out of the ground no matter what we do) but our oil use is stil increasing in the US and China is growing like crazy. It will result in gas prices going up up up in the next 10 years, and it will get to the point that most people can't afford to drive a car around anymore. After that most people won't be able to afford to live outside of a large city anymore.

It is a real problem, renewable enegry could stop it, but there seems to be very little going on to develope it.

Even the people who put solar panels on their roofs don't do it just out of the goodness of their hearts, they found a formula that will let them save money in the long run. Some hybrid car drivers may be more like you, most formulas say you will loose money in the long run vs buying a normal car. Some of those people do it out of the goodness of their hearts, but many are banking on fuel prices going thru the roof in the next decade. (which for them gives them a formula of saving money)
